Pop quiz: do you know what ‘Creepypastas’ are? Me either. Dr Google defines this as ‘internet horror stories passed around on forums and other sites to disturb and frighten readers’. The name “Creepypasta” comes from the word “copypasta”, an internet slang term for a block of text that gets copied and pasted over and over again from website to website.
American Honey tells the story of a troubled girl who escapes an abusive home to join a band of (equally troubled) travelling youths. In between heavy partying and the general rebellious teenager tom-fuckery, this group of misfits move from door to door selling both lies and magazine subscriptions. The plot follows Star, who, after a chance encounter with Jake (Labeouf), decides to leave her abusive provider ‘Daddy’ in the rear-view mirror. What follows is a profound journey that symbolises the importance of having a sense of belonging.
I’d be lying if I said my initial attraction to the film wasn’t based entirely on the depth and caliber of the cast. For your reference (and my disdain for typing) I have created a gif of all the heavy hitters below. Above and beyond the cast, I really enjoyed how the director (and lead), Kenneth Branagh, brought the famous tale by Agatha Christi to life.
It is always a good day when you get to listen to new Vancouver Sleep Clinic. Hailing from Brisbane, Australia, Tim Bettinson decided to release his music under the alias of ‘Vancouver Sleep Clinic’ as he thought his music was the kind the people could fall asleep to. If you have ever listened to any of his tracks, you will soon understand why.
It’s not every day you are blindly trawling the depths of Soundcloud and stumble upon something that truly grabs your attention. That was exactly the case with ‘Jenny Jenkins’. Despite being quite far removed from my normal taste, this track’s melody haunted me for days after just a few listens – it was at this point that I knew I had found a gem. I honestly can’t understand how this hasn’t received more plays.
Based on the actual events that transpired in Amarillo, Texas in in 1997, Bomb City tells the story of a a seemingly harmless rivalry between two groups that boils to a breaking point. Without giving too much away, many people refer to this infamous case as one of the greatest injustices to ever occur in America. Warning: if you are going to watch this, do not research what happened as that will take the punch away from the movie.
Aussie up-and-comers Crooked Colours really made a splash with their latest 10 track ep titled ‘Vera’. If someone was to ask me to describe their sound (which they haven’t but IDGAF) I’d say they are two parts Rufus and one part Sticky Fingers. These influencers become delightfully apparent on the 10-stop journey that is ‘Vera’. If you listen to just one, please make it ‘Perfect Run’ – it is to the ears what a crisp red apple is to the teeth….delicious.
Disclaimer: This song is 5 year old, however, after a listen you will quickly realise that this track is like a fine wine…time only makes it better. Jerome LOL has taken Rihanna’s strong vocals and infused them with just the right amount bang. Nestle this one firmly in your wheelhouse.
I don’t even know where to start with Wonder. If you have seen the trailer or read the book, then you will know what to expect, but for those who haven’t – this is a legit emotional roller-coaster. Wonder tells the story of August Pullman (Jacob Tremblay), who is about to experience elementary school for the first time after being home schooled his whole life.
